There is a lot of stigma around the word, Botox®. Many people believe it simply gets rid of wrinkles and leaves you with a tight, immobile, and unnatural looking face. Fortunately, only the fist half of that statement is true though, and Botox® can be used for many reasons.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a prescription medicine derived from botulin. It can be injected into the muscles to help with many medical and cosmetic issues. Some only use it to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it can also be used for many other purposes. Botox® can be injected into the armpits to decrease perspiration. It can also be injected into the temples and other areas of the head to ease the pain of migraines. Surprisingly, Botox® can even help to control urinary incontinence.

For most, Botox® is primarily used to treat wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes, forehead, and mouth. Botox® works by temporarily blocking certain neurotransmitters from reaching the muscles in your face causing the targeted muscles to relax and stop pulling on certain areas of the face. This then causes the lines around your face to soften and appear much smoother.

How long does it take for Botox® to work?

For most patients, results will begin to appear after five to seven days. However, to see the lasting look of your Botox® treatment, wait until two weeks have passed. This is the look you will have until your treatment begins to wear-off.

How long does Botox® last?

A Botox® injection typically lasts about three to six months. However, as you continue to receive Botox® treatments, the effects will start to last longer, and you won’t need to return to your doctor as often. This is one of the many perks of a Botox® treatment, the more consistent you are in keeping up with your treatments, the less you will need them down the road.

Is Botox® safe?

Men and women interested in their first treatment often wonder about the Botox® side effects, and the good news is, they are minimal. The side effects of Botox® occur around the area you received your injection. You may experience a bit of redness or minor bruising after your treatment. Some people also experience soreness and stiffness in the area treated. Each of these side effects are temporary and do not last long, but if you are worried about visible signs of a Botox® treatment, you may want to make sure you have some planned time at home while you heal.
